First, what is Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in call captioning?

The wonder of captioned calls is the way the words a caller says are displayed on a screen in near-real time. For the hard of hearing, this provides ease, comfort and peace of mind knowing they’ll see every word, accurately and automatically.

Now, back that up a step and understand that Automatic Speech Recognition—that’s “ASR”—is what first captures, understands and transcribes a caller’s words, providing the actual captioned content that’s displayed. Pretty amazing stuff.

ASR, being a software tool, is lightning quick (yes, literally) and reliable. It’s doing the captioning work for you while all you see is captions during your phone conversation.

What is this enhancement? Say hello to Odin AI™

While Automatic Speech Recognition helps ClearCaptions achieve speed and connection for our customers, maintaining the best quality is also a top priority and makes for an even better overall caption experience. Our proprietary artificial intelligence software, dubbed Odin AI™, does just that. Working hard behind the scenes, this technology is used to automatically detect when your caller is speaking English or another language, reduce interpretation errors, and much more. What else does ASR technology do?

ASR does even more. Up until recently captioning services exclusively utilized human Communication Assistants responsible for monitoring and managing the transcription of spoken words to captions. Now ASR takes over this challenge in most of our captioned calls!

Another benefit of ASR? Captions are easier to read and understand as they appear on your phone. They now have punctuation and capitalization to clearly define sentences and make it even clearer to understand everything a caller is saying, so you can get the whole conversation.

Coupled with the automated call relay and response, our ASR technology can effectively balance the volume of inbound calls; that is, the number of calls coming in that can sometimes result in spikes during busy call days or times (think about Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and holidays when everyone is looking forward to chatting with loved ones). ASR can react to spikes in call volume and balance those across its virtual Call Agents, ensuring call pick-up times remain consistent.

Finally, ASR technology eliminates the occasional interruption that occurs when a Communication Assistant needed to transfer a lengthy call to another agent. ASR doesn’t get fatigued or have inconsistencies between agents. No call transfers required. Problem solved.

There is a cost for each minute of captions generated, paid from a federally administered fund.
